Lesson #8:
Selective Breeding
Learning Target🎯
I can explain how humans use the process of selective breeding (artificial selection) to influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms over generations.
Success Criteria ✅
I can analyze and compare the intended benefits with the potential unintended consequences or drawbacks associated with long-term selective breeding practices.
I can synthesize evidence from examples to construct an argument demonstrating how selective breeding provides evidence for the modification of species by human influence over time.
I can compare and contrast the fundamental approach of selective breeding with the approach of modern genetic engineering, identifying similarities and differences in their methods and potential outcomes.
Standards:
P-12 NYSSLS - HS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from: (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, (3) mutations caused by environmental factors and/or (4) genetic engineering.

Connections
Directions: Watch the video. As it is playing, keep an ear out for the word you were assigned.
Selective Breeding, traits, offspring, genetic, diverse, Grey Wolf, Species, domestication, genetic disorders, hip dysplasia, trade-offs, Dogs
Task:
1) Find someone with a vocab word that relates to yours.
2) Create ONE (1) conjunction to show the relation between the two pieces of vocabulary:
Because - But and So
Example:
Grey wolves are related to selective breeding because.....
Genetic Disorders are related to domestication but......
Hip Dysplasia is related to trade-offs so....

Vocabulary
1)Selective Breeding / Artificial Selection:
When people choose animals or plants with traits they like—such as size, color, or strength—and breed them to pass those traits to their babies. Over time, this can lead to animals or plants that have more of those desired traits.
2)Domestication:
The process of taming and breeding animals or plants over time to make them more useful to humans.
3) Inbreeding:
Mating between closely related individuals, often used to preserve certain traits but can lead to health problems.
